Pierre-Baptiste Castandet - Research on Allied Crashes in Gironde

Passionate about history and a specialist in American aviation during World War II, I have dedicated my research for many years to the memory of Allied aviators and the transmission of their history.

I am the author of Tombé du ciel – Le récit d'évasion d'un pilote américain en 1944, a book resulting from over fifteen years of research. Based on extensive archival work and eyewitness accounts, it recounts the extraordinary escape of American Lieutenant David A. Donovan, shot down over Chalais in 1944. Through this historical investigation, I shed light on the fate of these men and the crucial role of the Resistance networks that contributed to their rescue.

My research also focuses on Allied aircraft crashes in the Gironde region. By combining military archives, period documents, and field investigations, I strive to reconstruct the history of these aircraft and their crews in order to preserve the memory of those who fought for freedom.
